The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed serious concern over the recent surge in violence across Bangladesh, urging an immediate end to revenge attacks that have targeted communities amid ongoing unrest. The UN official warned that retaliatory violence is deepening divisions and putting innocent civilians at risk.

In a statement, the rights chief emphasized that acts of revenge undermine the rule of law and fuel further instability. Stressing that justice cannot be achieved through violence, the UN called on all parties to exercise restraint and ensure the protection of human rights, regardless of political or social affiliations.

The UN also urged Bangladeshi authorities to take swift and impartial action against those responsible for inciting or carrying out attacks. It highlighted the importance of accountability, noting that failure to address abuses could lead to long-term consequences for peace and democratic institutions in the country.

Calling for dialogue and reconciliation, the rights body appealed to political leaders, security forces, and community groups to work collectively toward restoring calm. The statement underscored that lasting stability can only be achieved through lawful measures, respect for human rights, and inclusive governance.

The UN reaffirmed its readiness to support Bangladesh in efforts to de-escalate tensions, promote justice, and prevent further human rights violations as the situation continues to evolve.

The UN High Commissioner noted that periods of political tension often give rise to retaliatory violence, but warned that such actions only worsen human suffering and weaken public trust in institutions. Emphasising the need for restraint, the rights chief said communities must not be punished collectively for the actions of individuals.

According to the UN, reports of targeted attacks, destruction of property, and intimidation have raised serious human rights concerns. Vulnerable groups, including women, minorities, and children, are at heightened risk during such episodes of unrest, making it essential for authorities to ensure their safety and access to justice.

The rights office also stressed the role of law enforcement agencies, urging them to act professionally and without bias. Any excessive use of force or failure to protect civilians, the UN said, must be thoroughly investigated in line with international human rights standards.

The statement further highlighted the importance of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, reminding all stakeholders that dissent must be addressed through democratic and legal means rather than violence. Suppressing voices or resorting to retaliation, it added, could further inflame tensions and destabilise the country.

As Bangladesh navigates the current challenges, the UN called for meaningful dialogue among political actors and civil society to address grievances peacefully. It reiterated that reconciliation, accountability, and respect for human rights remain key to preventing further escalation and ensuring long-term stability.
